about

The Voyager spacecraft were launched in the summer of 1977 on a voyage of discovery and hope. Due to a rare arrangement of the outer planets, close-up research of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune was possible in a minimum window of time and fuel use. Each body passed bent the craft's flight path and increased their velocity, which in some cases cut flight time to the next planet by more than half. In this new century, both craft have crossed the heliosheath, passing through the edge of our solar system. To this day, they continue to collect data on the stars and the boundary between our home and interstellar space.

This album has been a work of the past 8 months in trying to capture a sonic portrait of the journey of the Voyager missions. I had only started playing around with electronic music and instruments in the few months before this, and started playing around with some loose compositions, primarily based around simple arpeggiated bass lines and the wash of multiple reverbs.

This coincided with the inimitable Kara Schlegl asking if I could whip up a bit of music as a podcast intro for a project she was working on, with the general mood being cheesy 80s movie with heart. After putting down a few ideas, I sent through a track list including the bones of what would become Escape Velocity. Kara very kindly told me to not waste that idea on a project for her but to actually do something with it, and that transpired into the creation of the rest of this EP.

As new ideas and track demos started to be built up, the story of this journey across the solar system and beyond started to appear, and helped to hone the work into a clear vision. Across three months, I continued to work on the tracks and slowly mix and design them to a place that felt like the best I could do with my current knowledge and skill, after which I handed them on for mastering.

And now they are out in the world with you. I hope you enjoy some part of this work, that it tickles you or makes you imagine these sleek hunks of metal and code as they push beyond the known realm and into the dark, beautiful unknown.
